first Porsche, please be gentle. i teach in New Braunfels, i have been saving for a Macan for two years, and now there are two real options in front of me and the numbers are making my head hurt.

option one: 2019 Macan base, 2.0 turbo, 38k miles, CPO at the dealer in San Antonio, 41,900 plus tax and their doc fee. CPO on a car this age is the 2 year unlimited mile Porsche warranty that starts the day you buy it, since the factory warranty is already gone, so through fall 2027. i had to read the brochure twice to get that out of the salesman.

option two: two 2019 Macan base cars on pace ace motors right now, one in a yard in Fort Worth with 41k miles and one in Oklahoma City with 29k, bank repos, sealed bid, starting numbers around 31 and 33. their warranty is a limited one, six months or ten thousand miles, covering mechanical defects at the time of sale and failures under normal use. plus the 30 day money back thing if the listing was wrong about the car.

so the math i am trying to do: is 2 years of Porsche warranty worth 8 to 10 thousand dollars more than 6 months of a broker warranty on the same car. what actually breaks on a 2019 Macan in years 6 and 7, and what does it cost. i emailed the pace ace people and they repeat what the listing says, which is fair, so i am asking here instead.

what breaks on a 95B base in years 6 and 7, from the shop floor, with indy prices in San Antonio. dealer is roughly double.

transfer case. the 2.0 is not spared, it has the same style transfer case as the S and it is the number one item. shudder under light throttle at 40 to 60, worse in warm weather. a fluid change fixes the early ones, 160. a replacement unit is 2,200 to 2,600 installed at an indy, closer to 4,000 at the dealer.

PDK service, due every 4 years or 40k, 650 to 750. not a failure, a service, but the CPO does not pay for it either.

water pump and thermostat on the 2.0, weeps somewhere around 60 to 80k, 900 to 1,100.

coolant pipes under the intake on the 2.0, less common than on the V6 cars but it happens, about 1,400.

the PCM screen delaminating. cosmetic, the dealer wants 2,000 for a new unit, nobody fixes it.

so realistically a 2019 base with 30 to 40k has one likely event in the next two years, the transfer case, and one likely service, the PDK. if the transfer case goes in the first 6 months the broker warranty covers it. if it goes in month 14 it is on you and it is 2,500. CPO would pay that, but you paid 9,000 for the CPO. i am not going to tell you which to pick, that is the exposure.

the 8 to 10 thousand is not all warranty. on a CPO Porsche about 2,000 to 2,500 of the price is the CPO program itself (the inspection, the reconditioning, the fee the dealer pays Porsche) and the rest is dealer margin. so you are paying maybe 2,500 for the 2 year warranty and 6,000 for the building with the Porsche sign on it. if you bid 33 on the Oklahoma car and set 3,000 aside in savings for the transfer case, you have the same coverage the CPO buys you and 5,000 left over. the risk is the sealed bid, you might not win, and the car might have a story the photos do not show, which is what the 30 days is for.

i did this math in september with an S and went the repo route, my thread is in this board. two things i learned that apply to you. the 6 months goes fast, mine is up in march, so if you buy through them get the PDK done and the transfer case fluid pulled in the first month, because if something is wrong you want to find it inside the window. and the CPO car comes with two keys, a full detail and a tank of gas. mine came with one key and a plug in a tire. it was about 1,100 of small stuff that the CPO price hides inside it. still came out ahead, but budget for it.

a different angle from somebody who bought his GT CPO. the warranty is why i did it and i would do it again on a Bentley, because a single failure on that car is 8 to 15 thousand and the CPO paid for a transmission cooler line and a pair of struts in year one. on a 2.0 Macan the worst normal thing is 2,500. the math changes with the size of the bill. i would not pay 9,000 to insure against a 2,500 problem.

update since a few of you asked in messages. i bid on the Oklahoma City car, 33,600, and did not win it. no idea by how much, that is the part i still hate. a 2019 base with 34k came up on the pace ace auction in a yard in Austin two weeks later and i bid 34,100 on that one and won. it is scheduled to come to New Braunfels on the truck next week. i took the advice here and booked the PDK service and the transfer case fluid at pdk_indy_tech's shop for the week after it lands. the CPO car is still on the dealer's website at 41,900 by the way. i will write the whole thing up in its own thread once it is here and i have something real to say. one key. i asked this time.
