2018 X5 xDrive35i, F15, N55, 70,400 miles. bought it at 41k in 2022. it shifts fine, no flares, no harsh 2-1 downshift, nothing. took it in for the oil service at the dealer in Boerne and asked about the transmission and the advisor said it is a lifetime fill, BMW has no interval, we do not touch it.
then i went and read the ZF side. ZF builds the 8HP, and ZF's own service information says fluid and pan filter somewhere between 50,000 and 75,000 miles depending on use. so the maker of the gearbox says change it and the maker of the car says never. this car has spent three summers idling on 1604 at 105 degrees, which is not what i would call light use.
for the people who have done one: dealer, indy or DIY, what fluid, what does the pan cost, and is there any truth to the "if it has never been done do not do it now" story at 70k.

i do the same box in Cayennes (the 958 and the 9YA both run an 8HP) and i change it every 60k or so. the pan on yours is the plastic ZF pan with the filter molded in, 200 to 260 for the ZF branded one, do not buy the no name. fluid is ZF Lifeguard 8, figure 9 liters to do it right with a second drain, 25 to 30 a liter. the level is set with the engine running and the fluid between 30 and 50 C, through the fill plug, so you need a scan tool that reads trans temp and a pump. the mechatronic sleeve, the plastic adapter where the harness goes into the valve body, is what leaks after a pan job on these. i replace it while the pan is off, 30 bucks.
the "do not touch it if it has never been done" story comes from old 4 and 5 speed boxes where fresh fluid detergents loosened the crud that was holding worn clutches together. at 70k on an 8HP that is not a thing. at 180k never done, maybe. yours is fine, do it.
indy cost around San Antonio for pan, sleeve, fluid and labor is 550 to 700. the dealer will quote 900 and up if they agree to do it at all.

different brand, same box. the Q7 has an 8HP too and audi says the same thing, lifetime. i had mine done at 62k at an indy in Cedar Park, 640 out the door. what i noticed after: cold shifts in the morning are cleaner. it was not broken before, but the 3-2 downshift coming off the highway ramp used to clunk a little when cold and that went away. worth it to me for what a replacement 8HP costs.

not a ZF question but the same argument. the AMG speedshift version of the 9G in my E63 has a 40k fluid interval in the AMG service sheet and the regular E class with basically the same box says lifetime. the lifetime claim is a number for the first owner's lease. the second owner pays for it. change it.

from the other side of the fence. i put a few hundred off lease BMWs and Audis through the lanes every year and i read the condition reports. an 8HP that has never been serviced at 75k does not show up as a problem in the report. the ones that show up are 120k plus with a shudder, and by then the buyer at auction just discounts the car two grand and moves on. so BMW is right that most of these outlive the lease and the CPO period on the factory fill. you are past both of those. do it.

done. indy in Boerne, 615 total: ZF pan with filter, Lifeguard 8, the sleeve, and they set the level with the fluid at 40 C on their scan tool. what came out was dark brown, not burnt, and the pan magnet had a thin grey film, no chunks. 400 miles since and the only difference i can feel is the 2-1 stop at a light is softer. so no drama at 70k, and i will do it again at 130.
for what it is worth the ZF service numbers are on zf.com under aftermarket if you want to show your advisor where the 50 to 75k comes from.
